Speaking as someone who tries to make an effort to avoid sexual content on my blog to keep it safe for everyone, Tumblr’s new decision is complete garbage. My decision is my decision. I would never want to force the tone I maintain on anyone else’s blog.

me at 20: theres a deep and insidious culture within rp communities where the majority of folks who joined them as young teens were preyed on and abused by much older adults and i wish i had more guidance on how to avoid these situations as a child.

PSA for teens:

• the people in your rp group are most likely older than you are. make sure that it is an established thing that you know their ages, or at least whether or not theyre 18+, AND that you’re a minor.
  
• you do not have to give away any personal information that you don’t want to. the people you rp with might start to give out their names, where they live, and other personal details as you all get to know each other. if you’re pressured to giving out any personal info, you might want to reconsider your trust in them.
• if it’s something impersonal like omegle where you’ll probably never talk to the other person again, be wary. you don’t know if that other person is 16 or 30. at some point probably ask out of character about their age, or just straight up say you’re a minor and see if they’re cool with it.
• you do not have to rp sex scenes. especially with older people, and no matter what your IRL experience. i was pressured into smut rp when i was 15, with a person who was at least 21. i’d never even had my first kiss before at that point. don’t do it.
• it’s okay to say no to scene ideas. no matter what they are, if you don’t want to do them then you don’t have to.
• make sure that the people you rp with censor or tag explicit content. if they don’t, or if they make fun of you when you ask, that’s probably a big red flag.

PSA for adults:

• censor your shit. everything from gore/violence to smut– if it would put the rating of a movie up to at least a PG-13, tag it. 
• if you don’t want to rp with kids, find a group that’s 18+. there’s a bunch out there.
• if you DO rp with kids, remember that they are just teenagers. 17 year olds now were born in the year 2000. 16 year olds are still in high school. they don’t have the life experiences you do, and you need to take that into account.
• do not make fun of people who don’t want to do a scene. don’t pressure people, and take care with how you prompt someone who’s a minor. 
• don’t rp sex scenes with minors. like. yall
• if you see another adult pressuring a minor into doing smth, or if they’re just interacting with a minor in any weird way, privately message them and remind them. i was doing a smut scene with someone my age, and another rp partner seven years older than me was lurking in our private chatroom to watch it. nobody else said anything. don’t let that shit be normal.

Also-

be wary of people who talk about ‘shipping whatever you want!’ and ‘fiction doesn’t affect’ reality! and all the folks who complain about ‘antis’ because that’s a bad crowd. 

if they reblog a lot of stuff like that, especially if it’s vague and never names a specific pairing or issue, steer clear. a lot of the time it’s a dogwhistle for ‘i want to ship pedophilia and incest and everybody should just shut up and let me’

countless people have spoken out about how this sort of behavior was used to groom them and this entitled attitude needs to be rooted out of fandoms permanently.

I can’t believe this needs to be said, but the rich are not doing you a service by employing you. They require you. Everything they have is contingent on the fact that you work for them and do what they say. Without you, the rich have literally nothing. Workers have power over the entire economy.

It is actually workers doing a major service to their employers by not unionizing and not starting a revolution, since literally the only thing workers need to do to grind the entire economy to a halt is put their hands behind their back and stop working. That is it. Workers could crash the entire machine in one moment if they wanted.

Stop calling them “job creators.” They aren’t. They literally require you. But you dont require them. You are wealth creators. And you have the power to take it back whenever you want. You just have to organize.

The “tolerance” movement of the 90’s that told everyone “you don’t have to like or accept or respect everyone, just tolerate their existence” was a total failure, and will always be a total failure, because it did not address any base problems or issues.

Just because a man doesn’t call me a faggot to my face anymore doesn’t mean he still isn’t a homophobe that privately thinks I should be stoned to death. You’re not addressing the problem, you’re literally ignoring it. It doesn’t even mean that, privately, I still won’t get beaten or called slurs because hey it’s out of the public eye. As long as it looks like I’m being tolerated then it’s all cool right?

All it did was just move it to the shadows. Let people continue their bigotry behind closed doors so that when there wasn’t societal pressure to keep it hidden, like, say when a President is openly bigoted and shouts at rallies that “PC has gone mad and we can’t say what we think,” suddenly it’s all back in the open again. Hate crimes go up, violence and slurs and open hatred start becoming a norm again. Nazis might say lead torch lit rallies to synagogues, mosques, and black churches.

All the tolerance movement was, was a way for White cishet liberals to not have to think difficult thoughts on race, gender, sexuality, or religion. But once that veil of “tolerance” came off, suddenly they are aghast at all these bigotted people around them. Just because you didn’t want to see it or think about doesn’t make it go away. Address the real problems and maybe, in time, it finally will. You don’t heal by ignoring the disease.
